Quote from "To Kill a Mockingbird" (#2)

What does this mean to you?  Discuss.

“When a child asks you something, answer him, for goodness sake. But don't make a production of it. Children are children, but they can spot an evasion faster than adults, and evasion simply muddles 'em.”  --Harper Lee

  1. To me this quote means that children are smarter then they look they may not understand everything for they have a lot of questions to ask but if you don't answer those questions they know that they either asked something important or something they shouldn't know, so either make sure your ready with an answer or just be honest because they can keep pestering you until one of two things either happen, you get upset with them or you tell them the ugly truth. though some might argue that the ugly truth isn't the right thing to tell the child but i find you will be surprised at what a child really can handle. so really don't make a production of it or in other words speaking don't make it into a big deal and just be honest, sometimes it's OK to leave out details to protect a child's mind but just keep in mind that they aren't completely as unacknowledged as you think.

  2. I disagree, I think it means that children are people, only less influenced by the rules and ideas we gain as we age. When a child knows that you aren't giving them information it doesn't help them understand the concept any better than if you hadn't said anything at all. And, possibly, that you might as well answer because they asked, and confusing them further does not assist anything but confusion.

    1. so what you are saying furthers the point that they are smarter then one person thinks? when you don't give a child information and just confuse them by avoiding the question at hand you make them ask more questions because they know that you are avoiding answering them.

  3. Like all human beings, children like the truth. They hate to be lied to as much as adults do, probably even more so.

  4. I remember this from the book! It really made me think because I remember my parents saying something similar when I was a wee tike

  5. This makes a lot of sense because a lot of people think children know more than adults.
